Life

Eudokia the Child is a holy young girl commemorated in the Eastern Orthodox Church on September 10. Almost nothing is known of her life. Her memory survives only through a single liturgical notice, and she does not appear in the standard Synaxaria; she is consequently counted among the obscure child-saints of the calendar, venerated as one of the righteous rather than for any recorded deeds.

The sole testimony to her commemoration is the Jerusalemitic Canonarion, an early service-book of the Church of Jerusalem, where she is recorded on page 107. Beyond the bare fact of her commemoration, no biographical details—date, place, family, or circumstances of her repose—have been preserved.

Sources & Identity

The notice of Eudokia the Child rests entirely on the Jerusalemitic Canonarion (p. 107); she is otherwise unknown in the Synaxaria. Because of this scarcity she is easily confused with other saints of the same name.

Liturgical sources note a confusion in the Synaxaria between this Eudokia and a Martyr Eudokia of Anatolia (in Persia), commemorated August 4, who is herself sometimes identified with the martyr Ia. The relationship between these figures is unresolved, and Eudokia the Child is treated as a distinct commemoration.
