Our Venerable Father Theonas of Egypt

Life

Theonas of Egypt is venerated by the Orthodox Church as one of the ascetic fathers of Egypt. Little of his life survives in the written record; he is known chiefly from the synaxarion, where he is commemorated together with two companions, Symeon and Phorbinus (also spelled Fervinus), as saints of Egypt.

The Orthodox calendars commemorate the three together. In the Slavic tradition, followed by the Orthodox Church in America, their feast falls on April 5, while the Greek tradition observes it on April 4. The Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendars assign the group to the 4th century, the great age of Egyptian monasticism, though no detailed account of his life has come down to us.

An Ascetic of Egypt

Theonas is remembered as a venerable father, a designation indicating monastic and ascetic standing rather than martyrdom or episcopal office. Beyond his identification as a saint of Egypt commemorated with Symeon and Phorbinus, the surviving sources preserve no narrative of his life, asceticism, repose, or relics.

His memory belongs to the broad company of the Egyptian desert fathers, whose ascetic labors during the early Christian centuries shaped the monastic tradition of the Church. In his case, however, the record is limited to the bare commemoration, and the standard reference works note plainly that no detailed biography is available.
