Venerable Anatolius the Recluse was a monastic of the Kiev Caves monastery whose relics repose in the Far Caves of Saint Theodosius. He is commemorated on July 3. Almost nothing of his life is preserved beyond his name, his epithet "the Recluse," and his place among the holy fathers of the Far Caves; the surviving synaxaria record no birth, no date of repose, and no specific events.
His title reflects the most enclosed form of Kiev Caves asceticism: the recluse (zatvornik) withdrew into a cave cell for a life of silence and prayer. He is distinct from a separately venerated Anatolius the Recluse of the Near Caves, with whom he shares the July 3 commemoration and who must not be conflated with him.

Historical Context
The Far Caves, also called the Caves of Theodosius, form part of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the great monastery whose origins trace to the monk Anthony settling in a hillside cave around 1051. The caves grew into a system of narrow underground corridors with cells and chapels, and over the following centuries they became the resting place of many monastic saints whose relics are venerated there.
Anatolius belongs to this assembly of Caves monastics. The saints whose relics repose in the Far Caves span several centuries and a wide range of monastic roles, and they are honored collectively each year in addition to their individual feast days.

His relics repose in the Far Caves of Saint Theodosius at the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, among the incorrupt remains preserved in the monastery's underground corridors.
He is numbered in the Synaxis of the Saints of the Kiev Caves whose relics repose in the Far Caves of Venerable Theodosius, a collective commemoration the Church observes on August 28.
