Bessarion of Smolyan was a bishop in the Rhodope region of Bulgaria who was martyred by the Ottoman Turks near the end of the 17th century. He is venerated as a hieromartyr — a martyr of episcopal rank — and is commemorated on July 29. Beyond his episcopal office at Smolyan and the manner of his death, little biographical detail about his life is preserved.
Bessarion was long honored by local veneration in his region before he received any formal act of recognition. Texts for his glorification — an account of his martyrdom together with a liturgical service and an akathist — were prepared for his glorification by the True Orthodox Church of Bulgaria on July 29, 1999.
